Position Overview:

Magna Corporate R&D in Troy, MI is seeking a talented, visionary and self-motivated Technical Specialist – Software & Robotics to be a part of the Advanced Manufacturing / Robotics Group, which will create new automation solutions that improve overall system efficiencies, using advanced technologies (i4.0 & Adv. Mfg. building blocks).

The ideal candidate will have deep experience with theoretical approaches and practical implementations of automotive robotic work cells employing vision perception, tactile perception, sensor fusion, adv. analytics and autonomy. They will understand the complete process of concept, design, build and launch of these robotic work cells and the reporting process to various stakeholders.

This position will play a key part in the Advanced Manufacturing / Robotics Group and be a part of a tightly knit development team that creates, validates and implements advanced manufacturing solutions for the future.



Essential Duties / Responsibilities

Supports the development of short- and long-term R&D objectives and technology roadmaps.

Supports the technical vision for the company and plans for implementation of new advanced technologies.

Maintain and implement the short- and long-term development and technology roadmap.

Work with new product development, business development, and senior management to discern competitiveness of new technologies.

Create technical budgets, allocate resources, and determine schedule of technology releases or project deadlines.

Conceive of, plan, design and conduct research programs applying theory and principles of physics, chemistry and mathematics. Guide programs and establish scientific and technical directions.

Analyze research results and guide projects to determine feasibility for improvement of components, systems, and functional and performance specifications.

Confer with other project engineers to clarify or resolve problems and develop designs.

Maintain project schedules by monitoring project progress, coordinating activities, estimating timing needs and hurdles, sequencing project elements, and resolving problems. Prepare and present project progress reports.

Maintain proper filing systems to ensure all information, (electronic or hard copy), is stored according to department requirements.

Specify requests and coordinate sub-contracted work (e.g. FEAs, product validation, prototype parts manufacturing, CAD drawing file conversion, etc.) and assure timely completion

Support Testing & Validation activities by specifying test requirement & ensuring tests are completed to specification

Contribute to team effort by providing innovative ideas for products and processes and by sharing new information with others team members

Support the development of innovative technologies and manufacturing systems from the initial concept phase through the complete development process including design engineering, validation, prototyping, testing, and evaluation of the proposed production capable process and business case.

Maintain professional and technical knowledge by reviewing professional publications and establishing personal networks.

Present papers participate in symposia and committees on behalf of the group.

Participate on advisory boards and serve as peer reviewer of technical programs. Network nationally and internationally to advance the team’s knowledge.

Keep self and the organization abreast of developments in his/her programs, new technical methods and developments affecting the group for the purpose of recommend changes warranted by such developments. Use this information to update the technology roadmap for Autonomous Robotics Technology.

Pursue education and/or training in autonomous and machine learning technologies

Demonstrate sustained innovation and creativity leading to significant project accomplishments without direct technical supervision. Supervision provided as required on assignments as well as on broader general objectives and limits.

Establish and maintain an effective system of communications throughout the organization.

Analyze new technologies and run competitive analyses.

Represent organization with major customers, shareholders, and the public.

Initiate action to prevent the occurrence of any non-conformities relating to the product, process and system.

Identify and record any problems relating to the product, process, and quality systems.

Initiate, recommend, or provide solutions through designated channels.

Verify the implementation of solutions (quality systems).

Perform any other duties, special projects, and tasks as assigned



Qualifications:

10+ years of industry experience in applied research in the areas of Vision & tactile perception, advanced Robotics, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, SLAM.

5+ year of programming experience in C++, Python or other object-oriented software language.



Education / Experience:

BS, MS, PhD or deep technical experience in SW development and/or advanced Robotics automation.

Computer Science, Machine Learning, Robotics, or a related Engineering or quantitative field.



Special Knowledge / Skills:

Demonstrated ability to apply extensive and advanced principles, theories and concepts, and contribute to the development of solutions to complex problems that require innovation and ingenuity.

Demonstrated ability to recognize new science and technologies relevant within existing trends and business strategy and extend them into new applications.

Demonstrated technical ability and creativity to initiate, direct, and control specific projects.

Strong spoken and written English language skills. Additional languages desirable.

Experience with Design for Manufacturing and Failure Mode Effect Analysis (DFMEA/PFMEA)

Experience with Manufacturing Process, Assembly methods, and materials used in automotive products

Understanding of ANSI, SAE, QS-9000 and other industry/customer related standards

AI disciplines of particular interest: Knowledge Representation, Search, Constraint Satisfaction and Machine Learning Techniques, Agent Cognitive Architectures, and Underlying Hardware Architectures

Proficient Computer knowledge and skills, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Knowledge of the applicable laws, rules and regulations.



Physical Demands / Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear and use hands to finger, handle, and feel. The employee is required to reach with hands and arms and have adequate mobility to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.

Responsible for working in compliance with the provisions of the Health and Safety Act as well as any rules or standards otherwise specified by OSHA or MIOSHA or any other government regulations. Expected to exercise caution in all work activities and report any unsafe conditions, injuries, or near misses to the appropriate supervisor.

Domestic and international travel will be required up to 25% of the time.
