We are currently searching for a Scientist to provide support to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This opportunity is a full-time position with MSC, and it is on-site in Rockville, MD.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Maintain accurate, daily records of experiments and results in pen in bound laboratory notebooks and in electronic databases; make minor modifications or adaptations to established methods, procedures, and/or techniques to solve problems in the workplace.

  • Calibrate and operate a variety of laboratory instruments.
  • Prepare various media, stock supplies, and other reagents for use in the laboratory.
  • Perform a variety of complex procedures involving various techniques in molecular biology related to malaria parasites and the mosquitoes which transmit them. Because these parasites are human pathogens, some of these procedures will require operating in a BSL2 environment.
  • Maintain and support mosquito colonies.
  • Work with investigators on experiments to develop lines of mosquitoes with genetic modifications.
  • Develop and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for production of various species and strains of mosquitoes in a secure insectary.
  • Develop and implement record keeping systems and associated SOPs to record production of various lots and batches of mosquitoes.
  • Ensure sufficient quantities of selected species and strains of mosquitoes are available each week for experimental purposes.
  • Contribute to studies using the standard mosquito membrane feeding assay (SMFA), which involves feeding of cultured sexual stages of malaria parasites to mosquitoes along with animal or human antibodies. These experiments are used to evaluate candidates for malaria vaccines which might block mosquito-to-person transmission. This requires dissection of mosquitoes and accurate microscopic counting of slides containing mosquito tissues with stained malaria parasites. This work will also involve development of new techniques and SOPs to conduct this assay.
  • Write report(s) of findings, state methods and procedures, including any modifications employed, specimens and materials involved, and results of experiments.
  • Perform quality control of the laboratory including upkeep and routine maintenance of equipment upon government approval. Required to handle biological materials, infectious agents, biological wastes.
  • Perform computer analysis of data and use computers and various specialized software programs to prepare data for publications.

  • Master’s degree in Biology, Life Sciences or a related discipline. Three (3) years of specialized experience plus a Bachelor’s degree is equivalent to a Master’s degree.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in biology or a related field.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of maintaining accurate and detailed records.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of proper laboratory disposal methods and safety procedures.

  • Demonstrates experience working in a laboratory environment at a BSL2 levels.

  • Demonstrates experience in the rearing and maintenance of colonies of mosquitoes.
