The Adult Education - IBEST (Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training) Instructor is responsible for the development and implementation of integrated, career-contextualized instruction in reading, writing, math and work-readiness skills inside of specific Career and Technical Education (CTE) fields at Pima Community College. Candidates are responsible for preparing students for success in both college and career.



This is a highly collaborative role. The instructor will work as a partner in co-teaching teams comprised of an Adult Education Instructor and CTE faculty, who work together to ensure seamless integration of CTE and High School Equivalency (HSE) preparation content. This content includes but is not limited to reading, writing, math, digital literacy and workforce readiness skills. The instructor will also be a collaborative team member in larger, multi-agency work groups and a co-facilitator of wrap-around services for cohorts of students pursuing CTE certificates. The Adult Education - IBEST Instructor must be highly flexible and prepared to develop productive working relationships with faculty partners, multiple community partners and each of their students.

This position may also teach reading/writing or math classes to adult learners of all ages and skill levels at an Adult Learning Center, in a class schedule that may include evenings, weekends, and split shifts. Although each class is focused on a core subject such as math or reading, ABE instructors are expected to integrate workforce preparation skills, to contextualize lessons to careers, and utilize an online curriculum in efforts to support all students in achieving their short and long term goals. All instructors engage in ongoing, job-embedded, collaborative professional learning which includes coaching in addition to other required trainings.



Candidates that move beyond an initial interview will be required to complete a teaching demonstration to be considered for a final interview.



Continued employment in the position is contingent upon continued funding through designated external sources.



The work schedule for this position is flexible and may include working evenings, weekends and local travel.



Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Design and implement high quality curriculum and instruction for adult learners that is flexible, student-centered, standards-based, rigorous, blended, and contextualized to the appropriate career sector and specific educational needs of the student cohort

  • Collaborate with faculty in career and technical education programs to assist in the development of contextualized integrated basic skills curriculum that align to the goals and objectives of the particular certificate, degree or program and to the standards of the Arizona Department of Education. Collaboratively develop and conduct relevant assessments and assignments in accordance with program policies

  • Team-teach in a classroom comprised of adult learners pursuing a High School Equivalency diploma, students who have a diploma but can benefit from the additional skills development, English language learners, and first-generation college students

  • Deliver instruction to students using a variety of methods; adjusting teaching styles to meet the needs of a diverse student population using adult learning theory/principles and content knowledge of math, reading and writing. Integrate workforce preparation into contextualized curriculum. Adjust learning options for individuals with special needs, physical, and/or psychological differences

  • Maintain ongoing communication with team teaching partners, IBEST Student Services and Coordination teams, and Workforce Development Specialists from Arizona@Work to ensure a supported and streamlined experience for students. Participate in regular IBEST operational and instructional meetings

  • Assist in developing, assessing and analyzing program outcomes for the purpose of program improvement and enhanced student learning

  • Facilitate goal-setting activities with students to set and monitor goal achievement

  • Be available and accessible to students for academic consulting and support, in a manner appropriate to meet student needs, through a combination of scheduled office hours, email accessibility and other effective means of responsive and timely communication

  • Complete accurate and timely data collection and reporting

  • Represent Adult Education Program and the College at Conferences, State Committees, and/or various types of work groups

  • Engage in collaborative professional learning and continuing education to facilitate student achievement

  • Abide by Pima Community College rules of conduct

  • Perform other duties of a similar nature or level



Job Requirements:



  • Bachelor's Degree and

  • One year of experience teaching Adult Basic Education and

  • Arizona Department of Education certification or the ability to obtain the certification within sixty days from date of hire


The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, skills and abilities:



  • Knowledge of Adult Basic Education

  • Understanding of Adult learning theory, principles, and methods

  • Experience developing effective, career-contextualized curriculum and student-centered approaches to instruction; maintain cohesive, multi-level, diverse groups

  • Experience delivering a blended (online and face-to-face) curriculum

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with students, co-workers, supervisors, and the general public

  • Experience in fostering collaboration with college and community partners

  • Knowledge of Arizona Adult Education and College and Career Readiness Standards; State and National guidelines; WIOA guidance

  • College structure, systems, and processes

  • Strategies and tools for career navigation and exploration

  • Using technology to support classroom instruction and other job-related duties

  • Evaluating student progress through GED practice testing and TABE testing

  • Public speaking

  • Adjust and adapt to a rapidly changing environment

  • Ability to work varied schedules that may require evenings, weekends, multiple locations
